【Abstract】The evaluation of textbook is important for teachers t choose a book. This paper mainly analyze the textbook from macro scope.

1. Introduction
The textbook is important for language learning and it is a main approach for students to learn English. Textbook evaluation is also important for selecting a suitable book for students.
1.1 Background
In recent years, varieties of English textbooks occurred in the market which cater for the educational reform. Thus it is essential for English teachers to know that how to choose a textbook.
1.2 Purposes of this paper
Any series of textbook has its own advantages and disadvantages.This paper mainly analyze the merits and shortcomings of New Standard English (book 2) published by foreign language teaching and research press. The purpose of this paper is to help us use the textbook more efficient.
2. Definitions of textbook and textbook evaluation
Different scholars have different definitions of textbooks. In the narrow sense, textbook refers to a basic tool for students study and teachers teaching which is consistent with the curriculum syllabus. In the broad sense, textbook refers to all the materials which are used in the class and out of the class, such as advertizement, TV program and so on. Textbook evaluation is a matching process, the purpose is to evaluate whether the textbook is appropriate to something for a certain purpose. (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987, cited in Yan (2014:84)).
3. The evaluation of NSE textbook
We should take into account of many factors when we evaluate a textbook. This paper mainly use macro evaluation to evaluate and analyze the textbook benefits and drawbacks.
The macro evaluation of the textbook
This part using the external method to evaluate the textbook advantages and disadvantages.
3.1 Strengths of the textbook
From the point of external, we need to evaluate whether it suits for students learning needs, whether it fits to teachers teaching needs or whether it is appropriates to National English Curriculum Standards(Cheng, 2011).
This textbook can satisfy learners need. This series of textbook involves many topics such as life, culture, geography etc., which cater for students interests and learning needs. And the book compulsory course 2 is colorful, and different modules match with different colors which brings a new feeling when students are fed up with one topic for several weeks and make students have a different moods to learn. It is attractive for students and they are more willing to use this kind of colorful textbook.
This textbook can satisfy teachers requirement. It accompanies with some indispensable materials such as the cassettes, teachers reference book etc., which provide convenience for teachers. In addition, it lists some key or important knowledge points at the last of each unit, which gives teachers a direction of teaching.
This textbook can satisfy the National English Curriculum Standards requirement. It is published by an authority press and follows the National English Curriculum Standards closely. It points out the range of application, that is appropriate to students. It also advocates the goal that develops students integrated skills. Each module has independent reading, listening, speaking and writing parts, which focuses on developing students integrated skills. And its contents, methods, and activities are designed and organized rational. The arrangement of contents reflects the principle that from easy to complex, from shallow to deep.
3.2 Weaknesses
There is no perfect textbook. This textbook fits to senior middle school students who learn English from third grade of primary school. To some extent, it is not fair, because some students who have a bad basis cannot follow the level of this textbook.
4. Conclusion
This paper mainly evaluate the NSE textbooks strengths and weaknesses from a macro scope. The primary advantages of this book are that it meets students learning needs, teachers needs, and the requirement of NECS. The disadvantage is that the content is beyond what students can received, and it exceeds studies burden.
