Applicants must satisfy the University’s general requirements and the specific admission requirements of their chosen program. Applicants whose first language is not English and whose degree or equivalent qualification was awarded by an institution where the medium of instruction was not English will also have to meet the English requirements.
General University Requirements
For MPhil degree programs, applicants should:
have obtained a bachelor's degree from HKUST or a recognized institution, or obtained an approved equivalent qualification; and
satisfy the school and department concerned as to their fitness to pursue the postgraduate program.
For PhD degree programs, applicants should:
normally have obtained a master's degree from HKUST or an approved institution, or presented evidence of satisfactory work at the postgraduate level on a full-time basis for at least one year, or on a part-time basis for at least two years; and
satisfy the school and department concerned as to their chosen subject of research and their fitness to undertake the research.
Program Admission Requirements

English Requirements
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Paper-based test (PBT) score ≥ 550
Internet-based test (iBT) score ≥ 80
OR
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall score ≥ 6.0,
all sub-scores ≥ 5.5
In addition to the above, individual school and department may stipulate higher English proficiency requirement.
Note: TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test
