It Takes Two to Make a Quarrel
Here is a cartoon that could be taken as a satire on the unhealthy tendency of our society. In the dim moonlight, a donkey dressed in human clothes is walking stealthily towards the residence of "Bole", who is an expert at appreciation of swift horses in our ancient Chinese folklore. To gain Bole's favour, the donkey carries a large suitcase of cash under his arm. It dawns on us that the subordinates, who are symbolized by the donkey, are trying to bribe their superiors.
As is known to everyone, our times is one of keen competition. In the hustle and bustle of urban life, we all expect our salary to be bigger and bigger, and our social status to be higher and higher. Yet competitions should be waged on honest and fair terms, otherwise they will be harmful to the participants. If people resort to offering bribery to gain advantage over their competitors, they corrupt not only their own mind in this deal, but that of those who accept bribery as well. In the long run, it ruins the future of the both parties.
It takes two to make a quarrel, so is it with this event. The act of bribery takes place first in the bottom of people's heart, namely, the eagerness to offer bribery and the willingness to accept it. I suggest that vox populi be established so that even the very consideration of getting involved in bribery will be accompanied with a strong feeling of being guilty. The act of bribery will not disappear until it has been eradicated in people's heart.
