TotheVictorianswealsoowelawntennis,anationwidefootballassociationunderthemodernrules,poweredfunfairrides,andtheatr esofferingmassentertainment.And,ofcourse,themodernseasideisalmostentirelyaVictorianinvention.Thereis,ofcourse,adarkersidetotheVictorianperiod.EveryoneknowsaboutitmostlybecausetheVictorianscatalogueditthemselves.HenryMayhew’swonderfulsetofvolumesonthelivesoftheLondonpoor,andofficialreportsonprostitution,ontheworkhousesandonchildlabour—reportsandtheirstatisticsthatwereusedbyMarxwhenhewroteDasKapital—testifytothesocialconsciencethatwasatthecenterof“Victorianvalues”.
