Peine / Pain
法语的“peine”和英语的“pain”是一对“同源词”，其共同的“祖先”是拉丁语的“poena”，意为“惩罚，刑罚，罚款”（punishment, penalty）。这个“本意”在现代英语中已经基本消失了，只是在一些固定短语中尚有遗存，如：on pain of death：(违者)格杀勿论！（sous peine de mort）
现代法语的“peine”还保留了“刑罚，徒刑”的意义，翻译成英语要用“sentence”。
Exemple：
1.Le procureur general requit une peine sévère : vingt ans.
The public prosecutor demanded a severe sentence of twenty years.
公诉人要求判处重刑：20年徒刑。
2.Lorsqu’il fut reconnu innocent, Al Jackson avait déjà purgé la moitié de sa peine.
When he was found to be innocent, Al Jackson had already served half of his (prison) sentence.
当发现Al Jackson一案是冤案时，他已经服完了一半刑期。
“刑罚”就会带来痛苦，法语的“peine”和英语的“pain”都可以翻译为中文的“痛苦”。但“痛苦”和“痛苦”不同啦：“peine”是神精上的痛苦 (woe, sorrow)，而“pain”则是肉体上的“病痛，伤痛”（physical pain），常译为法语的“douleur”：
Exemple：
Elle racontait tout à sa mère : ses joies et ses peines.
She told her mother everything, joys and sorrows alike.
她什么都对她母亲说：她的快乐和她的痛苦。
对比英语的“pain”：“病痛，伤痛”（physical pain）：
I heard my son crying out in pain.
J’entendis mon fils pousser un cri de douleur.
我听到我儿子疼得哭起来了。
当然，英语的“pain”也可以用于引伸义，比喻：
That kid’s a real pain (in the neck)!
Ce gosse est un vrai casse-pieds / est vraiment pénible / empoisonnant !
这孩子可真烦人！（中文也说“真让人头疼”吧？）
此外，法语的“peine”还有“困难，辛苦，努力”（difficulty, effort）等意义，这些也都是“惩罚，刑罚” 的引伸义吧?
1.Il avait tellement grossi que j’eus de la peine à le reconnaître.
He had put on so much weight that I had difficulty in recognizing him / trouble recognizing him.
他变的太胖了，我都认不出来他了。(辨认他很困难)
2.J’ai peine à croire qu’il a fait son devoir tout seul.
I find it hard to believe / I can hardly believe he did his homework without any help.
我不敢相信他是自己独立完成作业的。（“相信”是件困难的事。）
3.Je ne dit pas que c’est facile. Il faut se donner de la peine, voilà tout !
I’m not saying it’s easy. You’ve got to make an effort, that’s all!
这不是件容易事。得付出努力，就这么简单。
4.Si au moins il se donnait la peine d’essayer !
If only he took the trouble to try!
要是他尝试着做一次就好了。
5.Tu aurais pu t’éviter cetter peine. Je n’avais vraiment pas besoin du livre avant demain.
You could have saved yourself the trouble. I really didn’t need the book until tomorrow.
