Contraire /Contrary
今天说的是法语的“contraire”和英语的“contrary”这一对“假朋友”。两个词意思差不多，都可以翻译成汉语的“相反”。但越是相似，就越容易上当啦！
作形容词用的“contraire”很少翻译成英语的“contrary”，而更多地译为“opposite, conflicting”等。
Exemple:
1.Les deux véhicules roulaient en sens contraires.
The two vehicles were going in opposite directions.
两辆车行驶的方向相反。
2.Deux forces contraires s’annulent.
Two opposing /opposite forces cancel each other out.
两个相反的力互相抵消。
3.Ils soutiennent des opinions contraires.
They hold opposite /conflicting views.
他们持有相反的观点。
4.Les deux frères étaient mus par des intérêts contraires.
The two brothers were motivated by conflicting interests.
两兄弟为相互对立的私利所驱动。
法语短语“être contraire à”表示“不符合”（incompatible），可译为英文的“go against”。
Exemple:
1.Cette action est contraire à la loi.
What you're doing is against the law.
你的行为是违法的。
2.C’est contraire au règlement.
It’s against the rules.
这违反规定。
短语“être contraire à”也可以表示其他意思。
Exemple:
1.Le café lui est contraire.
Coffee doesn’t agree with him.
他不适应咖啡的味道。
2.La sort nous est contraire.
Fate is against us.
命运和我们作对。
英语的“contrary”几乎不独立使用，而主要用在固定短语中，如“on the contrary”，“contrary to”，“quite the contrary”等。
Exemple:
1.The fact that I was an only child did not affect my socialibility; on the contrary, I was quite a sociable and outgoing kid.
Le fait que je sois un enfant unique n'affectait en aucun cas ma sociabilité, bien au contraire j'etais un enfant très sociable et très extraverti.
我是个独生子（女）的事实，在任何情况下都没有影响我的社交能力。恰恰相反，我是个爱交友，性格外向的孩子。
2.Je ne suis pas ton ennemi, bien au contraire!
I’m not your enemy, quite theopposite!
我不是你的敌人，恰恰相反！
在以上的例子中，“on the contrary”（au contraire）表示“相反，对立”的两极——“敌人→朋友”，“不爱交往的独生子 → 爱交友，性格外向的孩子”。
但法语的“contraire”未必总是表示“相反，对立”的另一极（敌→友，黑→白）, 有时是指“其他情况”。
Exemple:
Dans le cas contraire---otherwise, if this is not so
如果不是这种情况
Jusqu’à preuve du contraire---until proven otherwise
直到能证明是其他情况
Sauf avis contraire---unless I hear otherwise
除非我接到另外的通知
Sauf indication contraire---unless otherwise stated
除非有其他方式的表述
Le contraire aurait été étonnant.
It could hardly have been otherwise. （Anything else would have been astonishing.）
绝不可能是其他情况。
（看到了吗？“contraire”都翻译成了“otherwise”。）英语的“contrary”有时意为“执拗，逆反的”，常用来形容“不听话”的小孩子。
Exemple:
Peter is a contrary little thing. He always refuses to do what you tell him.
Pierre est un enfant très contrariant. Il ne veut jamais faire ce qu’on lui dit.
彼得是个非常恼人的孩子。你让他干什么他偏不干。
