Supprimer / Suppress
“Supprimer”（法）看起来不太象“suppress”（英）呀？怎么也会是假朋友呢？ 但是，两个词确实是货真价实的“同源词”。 法语动词“supprimer”的意思是“去掉，除去”（remove, get rid of），强调“完全，彻底消灭”要除掉的对象。
Exemple：
1.La municipalité a décidé de supprimer tous ces taudis.
The council has decided to remove / knock down all those slums.
市政府决定要拆除贫民区。
2.Ils veulent supprimer la loi qui limite l’émigration.
They want to do away with / abolish the law which limits emigration.
他们想要废除限制向外移民的法律。
3.Ils pratiquent des prix écrasés pour supprimer toute concurrence.
They charge ridiculously low prices to cut out / do away with all the competition.
他们的低价策略是为了铲除一切竞争对手。
4.Ces médicaments ne suppriment pas tout à fait la douleur mais ils l’atténuent.
These drugs do not eliminate the pain completely but they reduce it.
这些药物并不能完全消除疼痛，但可以缓解疼痛。
5.On a supprimé cet agent secret parce qu’il en savait trop.
They did away with / eliminated the secret agent because he knew too much.
他们干掉了这个特工，因为他知道得太多了。
6.Il a tenté de se supprimer à plusieurs reprises.
He tried to do away with himself / commit suicide several times.
他自杀了好几次（但没死成）。
7.Ce texte est trop long. Il faut supprimer quelques paragraphes.
This text is too long. A few paragraphs will have to be deleted / removed / cut out.
这段文字太长了。必须删掉几个段落。
8.On lui a supprimé son permis de conduire (sa pension alimentaire).
Her driving licence has been withdrawn / taken away (she has had her maintenance withdrwan / stopped).
她的驾驶执照被吊销了（赡养费被取消了）。
对比法语，英语的“suppress”并不“彻底消灭”其对象，而只是进行“压制，抑制” （réprimer，étouffer）。
1.The government had difficulty in suppressing the rebellion.
Le gouvernement a eu des difficultés pour réprimer / étouffer la révolte.
政府在镇压叛乱方面出师不利。
2.She had suppressed her feelings of guilt (anger) for too long.
Elle avait trop longtemps réprimé / étouffé son sentiment de culpabilité (contenu / maîtrisé sa colère).
她压抑自己的负疚感（愤怒）已经很长时间了。
3.He suppressed a yawn (a smile).
Il étouffa un bâillement (un sourire).
他强忍住一个哈欠（没笑出来）。
4.The paper was suppressed because of its communist bias.
Le jounal fut interdit à cause de ses tendances communistes.
该报因其亲共倾向而被禁。
5.His father tried to suppress the facts (the scandal).
Son père essaya de dissimuler / d’étouffer la verité (le scandale).
他父亲想掩盖真相（把丑闻捂住）。
6.The chief inspector asked the newspapers to suppress the name of the raped girl.
Le commissaire a demandé aux journalistes de taire / de ne pas divulguer le nom de la jeune fille qui avait été violée.
