We only know a little about his life. We know he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 and lived there until he was 28. We know that his father, John Shakespeare, made and sold gloves and purses. We know that he moved back to Stratford in about 1609. He bought one of the biggest houses in the town and lived there until he died in 1616. What was life like in Stratford when Shakespeare was a boy? The house he was born in has been kept as a place to visit. In about 2000 it was redecorated and refurnished with the latest discoveries about homes in Shakespeare’s time. The house was full of bright colours. Some beds had frames around them. The frames were used to hang curtains from. The walls of the house were bright too. They were covered in wall hangings, brightly painted cloth that covered all the walls. Wall hangings even went around the edges of the doors and windows. Maybe the colours were so bright because they were not often seen in very bright light. Electricity was not used.
