Dear XXX, I am writing to say that I am extremely sorry that I could not attend your birthday party last Monday。 Because my mother was seriously ill with fever, I had to send her to hospital and look after her there。 As a result, I could not make it to your party。 I indeed feel very bad that I could not say "Happy Birthday to you" face to face then。 I hope that my failure to show up didn;t spoil your night and that you will accept my apology。 Yours, Tom
