这个开头有很多可能性。我记得读过一篇,也是讲一个旅人到了语言不同的地方去吃饭,然后想吃蘑菇,因为不会说所以就示意侍者拿来纸笔,自己画了一个蘑菇,侍者看了以后说稍等,然后拿了一把雨伞给他。。。下面这篇也有点像,虽然讲的是法国人到英国,而不是英国人到法国。。。依照原文,这个学生忘记了鸡蛋的说法,于是画了只母鸡（hen）,问侍者母鸡的小孩叫什么,侍者回答小鸡（chicks）,然后很莫名他就知道说鸡蛋(egg)怎么说了。。。真的很奇怪,明明侍者都没提到egg的,他就突然会了,所以我怀疑是不是文章打错了,侍者就应该回答的是egg而不是chicks。( 68 ) A French StudentA French student goes to London for his holiday。He knows a little English,but he can’t speak very well。One day he goes to a restaurant。He wants to have some eggs,but he can’t remember the English word for “egg”。He looks around and sees a picture of a hen。He shows the picture to the waiter。“What do you call her children?” he asks。“Chicks,sir。” “Very well,” says the French student。“Bring me two eggs and a cup of tea,please。”（来源见‘参考资料’）其实还有一个可能性,以上的故事是一个很隐晦的笑话,这个法国学生意识到chicks在俚语中有“年轻女人、女孩”的意思,然后为了避免说“给我上两个年轻女人”这种令人误会的话,再加上他突然想起鸡蛋怎么说了,于是就说了egg。。。不过这个理解好像太扯了。。。而且chicks好像是美国的俚语,英国不知道有没有。。。罗嗦了很多,请忽略没用的部分。。。
