Legend has it that Emperor Yan had a daughter called Nvwa, who was lively, lovely, smart and kind. One day, when she went swimming in the sea, she was engulfed by the wind and waves and sank to the bottom of the sea forever. The girl is not reconciled. Her soul turns into a bird named Jingwei. Jingwei thinks that she has been destroyed by the merciless waves, and that others may also be taken away from her young life. Therefore, she constantly brings twigs and stones from the west mountain and throws them into the sea to fill up the sea. 传说，炎帝有个女儿叫女娃，女娃活泼可爱，聪明又善良。有一天，女娃到海中游泳时不慎被风浪吞没，永远沉入了海底。女娃不甘心，她的灵魂化为了一只名叫精卫的小鸟，精卫想自己被无情的海浪毁灭了，又想到别人也可能会被夺走年轻的生命，因此不断地从西山衔来一条条小树枝、一颗颗小石头，丢进海里，想要把大海填平。
